The User Problem

The rental car space is extremely complex for the average user, and is dominated by major companies.

. Time-consuming with lengthy paperwork
. Lacking in transparency regarding vehicle availability and pricing
. Too many variables adding to decision paralysis

. No way for private renters to get a foot in the door.

By addressing the paradox of choice, RentPro should be able to help users confidently navigate between trusted providers and better-value options. Streamlining decisions, surfacing savings, and making vehicle rentals smarter, faster, and more intuitive.

Design Direction:

Early prototypes highlighted the importance of creating an experience that felt enjoyable and approachable. I wanted users to feel welcomed, not just as renters, but as explorers with the freedom to choose any type of vehicle, even the unconventional or fun ones.

While the core functionality centres around enabling users to book any kind of vehicle, the app prioritizes high-demand categories like cars, scooters, and moving vans to ensure a streamlined and familiar experience, while still leaving room for discovery and flexibility.

Engagement: I tried to explore making the interactions colourful i.e. having the rental cards in the brand’s palette. Considering accessibility constraints I decided that this idea was more for fun instead of limiting friction, so I decided to drop it.

Staying Focused on the Mission: My core goal was to ensure that users felt fully informed at every step, clearly understanding all costs, potential savings, and rental rules. Transparency and clarity were non-negotiable to build trust and reduce friction in the decision-making process.

Equally important was giving users a sense of control. The app allows them to store and manage their bookings in one place, making it easy to review, modify, or adapt plans as their needs or environments change.

Versatility

Variety for different use cases

While renting vehicles, I realized that private car owners on platforms like Turo and SnappCar are often overlooked, despite offering cleaner, well-maintained cars and a smoother pickup/ drop experience without long lines or desk check-ins. As someone particular about cleanliness and a former top-rated Turo host, I saw an opportunity. With RentPro, I aim to elevate private rentals, making them a seamless, visible, and competitive option for users who value convenience, care, and quality.

Ride sharing is here to stay!

Reservation Flow

The theme of the app is transparency, whether it's payment benefits, requirements or pickup & drop-off times. Every detail is clearly laid out to support a smooth and confident booking experience.

Final Thoughts

Designing RentPro helped me explore the intersection of UX, trust, and transportation. It was a joy to combine a meticulous design process with real-world insights from my own experiences renting and hosting. This case study reflects my ongoing commitment to crafting intuitive experiences that feel effortless, even when the system behind them is anything but.

Key Learnings

Simplicity winsToo many choices cause friction; smart defaults and prioritization help.

Trust is earnedUsers renting out vehicles or boats care deeply about insurance, security, and who they're renting to.

Contextual design mattersShowing users the right option at the right moment (e.g., pulling payment method during checkout) is more helpful than overloading them upfront.

Systems thinkingI enjoyed building a system where public and private rental ecosystems could intersect smoothly.

Next Steps

Launch the beta versionReduce friction by using smart defaults to guide users through too many choices.

Conduct Focused User TestingValidate trust, insurance, and safety concerns with real private vehicle owners.

Integrate APIs Seamlessly Surface relevant options contextually instead of overwhelming users upfront.

Implement AI functionalityI’m particularly excited about refining the system where public and private rental ecosystems intersect. AI can help personalize options, predict preferences, and create a smooth rental experience that feels intuitive and thoughtful.

Smarter Payment Choices

Choosing the right payment method while planning a trip can

be tricky. During onboarding, users can upload their payment methods but I wanted to make that useful beyond setup.

At checkout, RentPro surfaces which card gives you

the best deal, insurance perks, or added

coverage, so you always

pay smart.

The next step is to add the

reservation to the wallet or even

access it from the account menu.

Karan Wants to rent out his bike three days a week to locals and tourists

He loves riding his VanMoof, but admits it’s pretty pricey and those monthly payments add up. If RentPro can insure his bike, he’s happy to rent it out a few days a week and earn some side income to offset the cost.

BIKE SHARING

woman in yellow crew-neck shirt and blue short shorts sitting on bench

Amy lives in a lake town and wants

to rent out her boat occasionally

She loves the idea of others enjoying the water, and if RentPro could connect her with licensed, experienced renters, she’d be happy to share her boat. For Amy, it’s not just about side income, it’s about creating opportunities and making the most of what she already owns.

BOAT SHARING

Jason and Deborah own a well equipped RV and would like to offset the cost by renting it out to trusted users.

Even if they only rent it occasionally, It’s about making ownership more flexible, and helping others enjoy the open road without full-time commitment.

The Tooltip in the widget tells the user what kind of rental it is, a private owner or a shop. Private owners list their vehicles through RentPro, turning the platform into an end-to-end vehicle rental tool.

The Widget automatically matches the brand or shop's color, making options more recognizable at a glance. Users can also save their favorites for quick access later.

The app needed to solve more than one challenge. Initially, I set out to improve the car rental experience, but as I explored the problem space further, I discovered broader opportunities. The platform could enable users to share unconventional vehicles beyond cars. In markets like the Netherlands and Denmark, where cycling culture and waterways are integral to daily life, extending rentals to bicycles and boats became a natural progression.

Final Product

Adding key information early helps RentPro recommend the most suitable rentals for each user.

A points system and account profile build trust through transparency and consistent renter history.

Choosing a vehicle type upfront allows the app to tailor results to the user's specific use case, reducing decision fatigue.

Customer Accounts

Empowering the User Through Informed Decision-Making:

The intent was not to overly guide the user, but to empower them with clear, timely information throughout their journey—especially around account settings and personal preferences. Transparency supports better decision-making without creating friction.

Leveraging my understanding of mobile architecture, I aimed to design a system that could aggregate data from the user’s various rental accounts. This would allow the app’s AI to surface smarter, context-aware suggestions. By enabling these systems to communicate seamlessly, the user benefits from a more unified and proactive rental experience.

Compatibility

To truly let users book any kind of vehicle, anywhere, RentPro needed to connect seamlessly with major rental providers based on the user’s location and preferences. The app suggests the best options, hands off to the native provider app for booking, and still keeps a record, ensuring a smooth experience with everything in one place.

Easing the Paradox of Choice

To address decision fatigue, I focused on empowering users without overwhelming them. RentPro allows users to filter by vehicle type and cleanliness, while also choosing pickup locations based on popularity, proximity, and personal preference, making selection feel intuitive, not frustrating.
